How do you choose a wedding suit that actually works for you? Read our latest blog on wedding suits for body types.
Finding the right wedding suits for body types can feel complex, overwhelming and even demoralising. It’s not just about wearing something that makes you look good – it’s about embracing a wedding suit that makes you feel good, too.
Realistically, not every suit works for every body. That’s where a lot of grooms go wrong. But, instead of hiding behind a suit that hangs like a curtain, the goal is to find one that actually works with your build – so you look sharp, feel comfortable, and walk into your wedding day with proper confidence.
By the end of this, you’ll know exactly what to look for and how to wear your wedding suit properly with confidence, flair and main character energy.

The most common body types (and why they matter for your wedding suit).
Your wedding suit should fit you, not the other way around. However, there are certain wedding suits for body types that do emphasise your silhouette a tad more. But, before we dive into that, let’s break down the main body types from a design perspective.
Broader shoulders / athletic
Built through the chest and shoulders with a naturally tapered shape, which means the challenge is finding a suit that doesn’t feel restrictive up top while still fitting cleanly through the waist.
Slim / narrow frame
Leaner build with less natural structure, where the challenge is avoiding suits that hang flat or feel oversized instead of adding shape.
Bigger midsection
More weight carried around the stomach, making the main challenge finding a suit that skims properly without pulling, clinging, or going overly baggy.
Taller builds
Longer in the body and limbs, which sounds easy, but the challenge is getting proportions right so nothing looks too short, too long, or slightly off.
Shorter builds
More compact frame, where the challenge is keeping everything streamlined so the suit doesn’t visually shorten you or feel bulky.

What actually works (body type by body type).
So, how do you actually choose the right wedding suits for body types?
Let’s start with our broader, athletic grooms. Typically, we recommend a structured jacket that follows your natural shape without pulling across the chest. Waist-wise, keep it slightly suppressed to avoid looking boxy and stick to clean, simple fabrics – anything too heavy could add unnecessary bulk. Tempted to size up for comfort? We strongly urge you not to. You’ll end up with a jacket that loses all its shape.
Over to our slim, narrow frame grooms. Here, we say look for tailoring that builds a bit of structure through the shoulders. In contrast to the broad shouldered body type, you may opt for fuller fabrics or subtle textures to add presence, as well as a well-fitted waist to create some shape (without going OTT). Avoid going too skinny or too oversized – both can kill the balance.
If you’ve got a bigger midsection, prioritise a straight cut that skims rather than clings. You may also choose a slightly higher button stance to help balance out proportions. If you’re not sure about colours, try on some matte, darker fabrics – you may find they amp up the sharpness while maintaining that understated flair. Waistcoats also make a huge difference. While most of our hire suits are a Drop8 (2” between chest and waist), a waistcoat still looks top notch underneath. You’ll just show off more of it – and that really isn’t a bad thing.
Taller in your build? Make sure your jacket and sleeve length is properly proportioned. Just as imports,t trousers should have the right break – not hovering, not pooling. You can still carry a bit more detail – like textures or layering – without it overwhelming the look. Avoid off-the-rack shortcuts that leave everything slightly too short (you’ll thank us later for that one).
Finally, our shorter grooms. Keep the silhouette clean and uninterrupted with a higher button stance and shorter jacket if you want to balance out proportions. Slim (not tight!) trousers will keep things sharp, while too much fabric or long cuts will visually shorten you even more.
The real secret? Fit beats everything.
Here’s the part most grooms underestimate – it’s not the colour, the lapel, or whatever trend is doing the rounds. It’s the fit. Get that right, and everything else falls into place. Get it wrong, and no amount of “nice fabric” will save it.
Off-the-rack suits might seem like the easy option, but they’re built for a generic shape; and no one actually has a generic body. That’s why something can look decent on the hanger, alright in the changing room, and then completely miss the mark when it actually matters.
This is where made-to-measure changes the game. Instead of forcing yourself into something that almost works, you’re building a suit around your proportions, your posture, and how you actually want to feel on the day. It’s a different experience entirely, and it shows.
Because when a suit fits properly, you notice it straight away. The jacket sits clean. The trousers fall right. Nothing pulls, nothing bunches, nothing feels off. You’re not adjusting it every five minutes or second-guessing how you look. You just get on with it – and feel in-cred-ible while doing so.
You stand a bit taller. You feel more like yourself – just sharper, more put together, more ready for the day ahead. And that confidence? It carries through everything, from the ceremony to the photos to the first time you see your partner.
At the end of the day, that’s what you’re aiming for. Not just a suit that looks good in pictures, but one that actually feels right the second you put it on.
