7 top ways to keep cool in a wedding suit this summer.

You’ve got the suit. The venue’s booked. The sun’s set to shine (yesss!). But if you’re getting married in the summer months, there’s one major detail that can catch even the best-prepared grooms off guard: how do you keep cool in a wedding suit?

A full wedding day in a tailored suit, under pressure, with potentially hundreds of pairs eyes on you, in warm weather can be… a sweaty business. And let’s face it – no one wants sweat patches the size of your head in their wedding album.

So, what can you do to stay cool, calm, and crease-free when the temperatures climb? Here’s how to keep cool in a wedding suit, even in the height of summer.

When you’ve booked a summer wedding, chances are you’ve done so with the hope of a glorious, sun-filled day. But, unless you’re getting married in a pair of trunks on a beach in the Maldives, the reality of your summer groom outfit in the sweltering heat can be a sticky affair.

Luckily, our summer groom style tips will mitigate the risk of a shiny forehead and damp pits.

1. Start with the right shirt

Even the most breathable wedding suit will struggle if you’re wearing a thick, synthetic shirt underneath. That’s why natural fibres are key. When you’re picking your wedding suit shirt, look for:

  • 100% cotton or bamboo
  • Lightweight poplin or broadcloth weaves

This one move alone can help regulate your body temperature, prevent sweat patches, and keep you feeling fresh from “I do” to the dance floor.

2. Lose the jacket after the ceremony

If you’re wearing a three-piece suit, don’t feel you have to commit to the jacket all day. Many grooms keep it on for the ceremony and photos, then ditch it for the reception. Your waistcoat will still cover untucked shirts and make you stand out as a member of the wedding party.

It keeps the look sharp early on and lets you breathe later – win-win.

H&G top tip: If your wedding is outdoors or abroad, check if your waistcoat is lined. Unlined or half-lined is noticeably cooler.

3. Keep accessories light

Details and accessories maketh a wedding suit; but, too many of them can make you overheat. Stick to breathable fabrics and minimal extras:

  • Choose a silk, cotton or linen tie instead of polyester
  • Keep your buttonhole flower small and simple
  • Opt for lightweight, unstructured shoes if you’re changing later in the da

And remember, no one’s judging you for ditching the tie after dinner. We all know Uncle Fred’s going to have it around his head by 7pm, anyway.

Go easy on the undergarments

We know: it’s hardly the most glamorous part of wedding prep. But breathable underwear and undershirts can make all the difference. Look for:

  • Sweat-wicking boxer briefs
  • Seamless vests or undershirts in moisture-wicking fabric

These won’t just keep you dry – they’ll stop your suit fabric from clinging if you do start to sweat.

Keep it shady (literally)

You may not have control over the weather, but you can plan ahead to stay out of direct sun when possible. A few simple ideas:

  • Ask your photographer to plan photo breaks in shaded areas
  • Have hand fans and/or cooling towels to hand
  • Bring blotting sheets or a handkerchief (not just for the tears)

H&G top tip: If you’re outside for any part of the ceremony, it’s worth asking the venue if they can provide parasols, fans, or shaded seating for guests too.

6. Hydrate like a boss

Sounds obvious, but when nerves kick in, it’s easy to forget. Drink water regularly throughout the morning and early afternoon. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean skipping the champagne – just balance it out with plenty of H2O.

Bring a reusable bottle and keep it close during the morning prep. You’ll be grateful later.

7. Bring a back-up plan

Having a quick-change kit nearby can make all the difference to how you feel by the evening. After all, brides often do it… Why should you miss out on comfort?

Here’s what to pack for a smart, subtle wardrobe refresh that still feels wedding-day worthy:

  • A fresh shirt: lightweight, breathable, and photo-ready
  • Alternative shoes: swap formal shoes for loafers or smart trainers later on
  • A different tie or no tie at all: loosen up the look for the evening
  • Spare socks: because no one likes a soggy pair
  • Cooling face wipes and deodorant: instant mood (and photo) boost
  • A clean pocket square: adds polish after a quick freshen-up
  • Optional: Swap the full suit for tailored trousers and a crisp open-collar shirt: perfect for a beach, garden, or destination wedding

Ask your best man or a family member to keep it nearby. It’ll be the unsung hero of the day.

Staying cool in a suit doesn’t have to be a mission.

Looking and feeling your best on your wedding day isn’t just about what you wear – it’s how you wear it. With a few smart tweaks, you can breeze through your summer wedding in style (and avoid the dreaded sweaty upper lip in your photos).
