From wedding aisles to black tie soirées, the right details turn a solid look into something memorable. So, whether you’re a groom, guest or groomsman, suit accessories have become a firm staple in wedding wardrobes.

Why do suit accessories matter?

Your suit is the foundation of your wedding outfit. But those carefully crafted accessories? They’re the thing that’s going to give it that unique touch (and leave your guests saying ‘damn, nailed it!’).

Formalwear details don’t just add polish; they bring in the personality. They add texture, elegance and flair. A look that lingers in people’s minds long after that last glass of champagne has been poured.

If you’re wondering how to accessorise a suit without overkill, remember: it’s about balance, refined details and confidence. Even just one well-chosen pocket square can make all the difference.

Suit accessories also play an important role in weaving your wedding theme together. From matching with the bridal party to giving a subtle nod to your floral arrangements, men’s suit accessories have the potential to both elevate your suit look and your overall wedding.

Think of them as the conversation starters of your outfit. The glint of a cufflink, the angle of a tie bar, the curve of a lapel pin… these are the features that show you’ve paid attention to the the details. And when it’s your wedding day? Those details are crucial. They’re what transform your suit from something you wear into something that tells your story.

The essential suit accessories checklist.

Pocket squares ✅

There’s a reason why pocket squares are a favourite among Hunter & Grey’s customers – these small pieces of fabric make a big statement.

A pocket square adds immediate interest to your wedding suit look; and that applies whether you’re adding colour, pattern or texture (or all three!).

The great thing is that you can match them perfectly with your tie – whether you’ve gone for a subtle plain colour or something bold and brave.

Ties and bowties ✅

Speaking of which, a tie or bowtie is the anchor of any formal look – and, as such, the one you choose is far from a throwaway decision. Before you settle on silk or texture, to knot or not to knot, ask yourself:

  • Does it complement my suit and shirt, or compete with them?
  • Am I going classic or bold, and does that suit the vibe of the day?
  • Will this photograph well (and will it make me cringe in 10 years)?
  • Am I choosing this because I love it or because I think I should wear it?

Drill down those answers, and you’re halfway to a flawless finish.

Cufflinks ✅

Cufflinks are ALL about effortless elegance. They’re also your chance to add a touch of heritage and storytelling to your wedding day. Engraved initials, meaningful symbols or a token of family history are popular cufflink ideas for the big day.

Whether you’re leaning towards sleek silver, timeless gold, or more modern materials like wood or enamel, aim to keep them in harmony with your other accessories (especially your watch and tie clip). This is going to ensure seamless synchronisation across your entire look.

Another top tip? If you’re looking for a gift for your groomsmen, cufflinks are always a surefire hit.

Tie bars and clips ✅

The best thing about tie bars and clips is that not only do they look great, they also keep your tie in place and you looking effortlessly tidy (believe us, your partner will thank you for that).

A few points to keep in mind when styling your tie bar or clip.

  • Placement: just between the third and fourth shirt button.
  • Style tip: match the finish to your watch – silver, gold, or matte.
  • Keep it simple: the tie bar should never be wider than the tie itself.
  • When to avoid: we tend to recommend grooms don’t pair a tie bar or clip with a waistcoat.

We also recommend that – as with all of your wedding suit accessories – you choose a tie bar or clip that’s going to match (not fight against) your overall wedding theme.

Lapel pins and buttonholes ✅

Lapel details are a spot-on choice for standout events; particularly weddings.

A classic floral buttonhole boutonniere is a groom’s best friend, and another brilliant way to enhance your overall wedding theme. Not feeling the floral vibes? There are tons of other options, such as metallic or enamel lapel pins which can offer a cleaner, contemporary alternative.

Placement wise, make sure you fix it in the right place – aka, the left lapel by (believe it or not!) the buttonhole. Do not, under any circumstances, place it on the right or at nipple height!

We tend to recommend that our grooms keep it to one – no one wants a busy suit. Plus, don’t choose a lapel pin or button hole if it’s going to compete with your pocket square.

Watches ✅

Watches are designed to standout. They can pull an entire wedding suit together, and yet many grooms underestimate their importance.

Don’t just grab any watch you’ve got to hand – choose it intentionally and you’ll find it becomes the pièce de résistance of your perfectly selected look.

Whether you prefer a classic leather strap, a minimalist metal face or something far fancier, coordination is key: match your watch strap with your belt and shoes and check in (a drum we will keep on banging!) that it matches the theme of your wedding day.
