Your destination wedding is officially booked, the flights are sorted and the chaos of the group chat is in full swing. Amazing. Now let’s have a chat about the part many grooms underestimate: your suit.
Picking your destination wedding suit isn’t the same as choosing something for a countryside venue in Hampshire. You’ve now got heat, humidity, travel, luggage limits, sand, sweat and the ‘but what if the iron doesn’t work?!’ fear to contend with. And while there’s a lot to love about a destination wedding, the reality is that they also add a lot of additional planning to your plate. The last thing you want is to step off the plane with a creased, overheating and sweat inducing suit of regret hanging in a garment bag.
That’s why we’ve pulled together a handy guide on what to wear, what to pack and what to absolutely avoid.
SAVE FOR LATER: 7 WAYS TO KEEP COOL IN A WEDDING SUIT THIS SUMMER
How to dress for the climate at a destination wedding.
You may have always pictured yourself in a structured, sharp three-piece for your big day. But, if you’re getting married in 30-degree heat, that heavy wool blend is quickly going to become your mortal enemy.
Fabric is everything. Opt for lightweight wool blends, linen (or cotton-linen mixes), unstructured jackets and half/quarter lined designs. These will add some breathability and movement to your wedding suit, and avoid overheating (and those sweat patches that will leave you cringing every time you look through the wedding album). If you’re leaning towards linen, be aware that the crumpled look is a feature, not a flaw – natural wrinkling adds to its relaxed elegance.
Avoid heavy layers – because while waistcoats look great, heatstroke really doesn’t. You can still embrace the layered look by wearing a waistcoat just for the ceremony, removing your jacket later or choosing lightweight construction.
Plus, remember that polyester-heavy fabrics cling and shine. Natural fibres are far better for destination weddings, both in terms of aesthetics and comfort.
Finally, don’t forget fit. An overly skinny fit in heat is going to feel restrictive, while something too lightweight is likely to flap about in a beach breeze. It’s all about the right tailoring; the type that will hold structure without suffocating you.
PIN FOR LATER: THE HUNTER & GREY’S APPROACH TO PERSONAL TAILORING
Destination wedding suit colours that actually work.
Your wedding colour palette should always complement the setting. For a destination wedding, this is no different.
Picture the 4 S’s: sand, sea, sunlight and soft stone backdrops. Wedding suits in light greys, beige/taupe, soft blue, sage or textured neutrals work beautifully. Typically, we find that black and heavy navy suits don’t quite have the same impact: they can look harsh in bright sunlight and overly formal, depending on the vibe. However, the right blue… Oof, now we’re talking!
What to pack for your destination wedding.
Packing your wedding suit properly is just as important as choosing it.
Here’s what you actually need:
✔ A proper, breathable suit carrier
AKA, do not (and we repeat, DO NOT) just fold it into a suitcase, squeezed between your speedos.
✔ A backup shirt
From travel delays, to luggage mishaps and ‘the night before’ drink spillages – always pack a backup shirt.
✔ Travel steamer
You can never trust a hotel iron. Pack a small handheld steamer: it’ll save your wedding photos.
✔ The right undergarments
Opt for lightweight and breathable base layers – no one wants heavy cotton trapping all of that heat.
When to sort your destination wedding suit.
For destination weddings, we recommend sorting suits earlier than usual. You may need more time for fabric selection, plus your fittings will need to be completed before you travel and any necessary adjustments can’t happen once you’re abroad.
With that in mind, we recommend starting the process 9 – 12 months before the wedding, kicking off with your consultation. 14 weeks before you travel, we’ll invite you in for your fittings. Your final fit should be 3 – 4 days before you travel (aka, just long enough to grab Uncle Bob a slightly bigger pair of trousers).
This – as well as choosing a wedding suit that can survive travel, handle the climate and make you feel incredible – will ensure your wardrobe can go off without a hitch.
